Scottish food producers team up to go ‘Wonka’
Sea salt caramel, smoky bacon, chilli, fudge, chocolate, popping candy….all wonderful taste sensations individually but they shouldn’t work together, right? Wrong! Two ‘Wonka inspired’ Scottish food producers have teamed up to create two weird and wonderful confectionary bars, which have gone on to become best sellers. Angus & Oink, the hot sauce company, and Cocoa Ooze, the luxury handmade chocolate company, have created two individually wrapped chocolate bars – popping candy chilli fudge chocolate flavour and smoked bacon sea salt caramel and chilli chocolate flavour.
Malissa Fraser, of Angus & Oink, says, “We had tried chilli chocolate before but had not discovered anything that set us on fire; to us, it was not that exciting. In a ‘Willy Wonka’ moment we decided to create our own super loaded bars in conjunction with a fantastic local chocolatier. In our popping candy chilli fudge bar, we use Trinidad scorpion powder to roll the soft fudge pieces in, which delivers chunks of super chilli heat. You think your mouth is alive with the popping candy, smooth velvety chocolate and a heat wave. This is oral stimulation on a whole new level.”
Malissa continues, “Our sea salt caramel and smoky bacon bar oozes with a salty layer of smooth caramel through the middle and is adorned with bacon flavoured crunchy pieces and bags of chilli. It’s the ultimate man bar! When we first took it to market people were a little skeptical about the combination of flavours, until they tasted it! There are many flavour pairings that should not work such as strawberry and black pepper, chocolate and beetroot, bacon and maple syrup, but they do! The bars have gone on to be best sellers on our on-line store and a definite favourite as stocking fillers.”
Jamie Hutcheon, of luxury handmade chocolate company Cocoa Ooze, says, “When Malissa first approached me about the collaboration I was surprised. We are not adverse to being adventurous with our own creations and popping candy features in one of our bars already but by throwing in chilli, and also a meat flavoured product, I definitely thought it was ‘out there’! After lots of research and development, and of course taste-tasting sessions, we came up with the perfect balance of flavours. The response to the bars has been fantastic and they have been sold at events and on-line.”
The individually wrapped chocolate bars retail at £4.50 each and can be purchased at our on-line store
