Sloppy Joes

This simple American staple makes for a stellar meal when hunger is calling. Our Montreal Steak & Burger seasoning dials the flavour right up, with classic oozy American cheese melted under the grill to finish. Serve it in toasted buns with pickles and red onion.

ingredients

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 1 red pepper, finely sliced
  • 500g minced beef
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • Splash of red wine vinegar
  • 400g passata
  • 2 tbsp Montreal Steak & Burger Seasoning 
  • 6 cheese slices
  • 4 burger buns
  • Salt & pepper to season
  • To serve: Pickled cucumbers and red onion

Directions

  1. Heat the oil in a large pan, tip in the mince, breaking it up and cooking until nicely browned. Remove and set aside on a plate. 
  2. To the same pan, add the onion and pepper and sauté for 8-10 minutes until soft and translucent. 
  3. Add the mince back to the pan and add the Montreal Steak Burger Seasoning, stirring to combine. Add in the tomato paste, a dash of red wine vinegar and let it sizzle for a moment. Then add the passata and let everything bubble away on the hob for around 5 minutes. 
  4. A couple of minutes before you turn the heat off, layer the cheese slices on top to melt into the mince.
  5. Toast the burger buns in a pan and fill the warm buns with the sloppy joes mix, finishing off with pickled cucumber and red onion.
